Fox Valley Veterans: A Salute to Hometown
Heroism
Author & Presenter: George Rawlinson, with & Gene Bonk
This book features the stories of several local
veterans who served from World War II through Operation Iraqi Freedom,
including Gene Bonk, who will tell of his experiences as a 22-year-old
master sergeant leading troops in the initial invasion wave at
Omaha Beach on D-Day. Gene Bonk is the chaplain of American Legion
Post 84 in Aurora. George Rawlinson is an author and freelance
writer. |

Book, One Batavia” selection. His best-selling book describes two years
in the lives of two boys growing up in Chicago’s Henry Horner Homes, where
they live amidst poverty and violence. The New York Public Library chose this
as one of the 150 most important books of the century. Kotlowitz, the author
of three books, is a journalist, contributor to Chicago Public Radio, and a writer-in-residence
at Northwestern University. |

From Lyceum to Library: A Free Public Library for Batavia

Sigournean Society (young women) and the Laconian Literary Society
(young men) at the Batavia Institute organized a library, which became
the Batavia Library Association, and which ultimately led to the
creation of the Batavia Township Public Library 125 years ago. |

A children’s librarian in Champaign and an
award-winning author, poet, and storyteller, Harrington grew up
in Alabama and Nebraska. Her first of three books, Going North,
is based on her own experience moving North in the mid-1960s. She
has performed at the National Storytelling Festival and her poetry
appears regularly in national literary journals. |
